Observation Narrative
Habitat is an isolated, long and narrow granitic "flatrock" on a gentle lower slope along a tributary of Cedar Creek. Most of the outcrop is covered by lichens and lacks both soil and vascular plants. A narrowly configured plot (5 x 20 m) was placed parallel to and near the upslope edge of the outcrop to capture several bryophyte mats and shallow depressions that support vascular flora. Sizeable mats of the moss Grimmia cf. laevigata follow depressions and crevices where ephemeral seepage and run-off are concentrated on the rock. Opuntia humifusa, Croton willdenowii, and Minuartia glabra have the highest cover (2-5% each) among the vascular plants recorded. Prominent lichens include a Xanthoparmelia sp., Cladonia spp., and Flavoparmelia baltimorensis. Dicranum sp. and cf. Bryum sp. are additional mosses occurring here.
