Observation Narrative
This plot is located on an elevated terrace within the broad floodplain of the Nottoway River. This habitat appears to be flooded only infrequently and supports an oak-dominated forest that differs compositionally from forests of adjacent swales and sloughs. The B-horizon clay soil exhibited orange mottling indicating poor drainage, but the soil was dry to a depth of > 20 cm on the survey date. The forest stand is medium-aged with overstory dominants ranging from ca. 50 to 75 cm DBH and 30 to 32 m tall. Quercus michauxii, Q. pagoda, and Liquidambar styraciflua have the greatest IV, with minor associates of Carya ovata, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Ulmus americana. The shrub layer is very open and the herb layer is dominated by sedges.
