Observation Narrative
This site is a seasonally flooded slough which drains the back edge of a very wide floodplain along the Nottoway River. The plot is near the mouth of the slough, where it feathers out into a low-lying flat that extends to the river. The vegetation is a second-growth forest with a typical canopy of Nyssa aquatica with some Taxodium distichum, but its herb layer is much denser and sedge-dominated than usual in this type of habitat. See also plots CHUB016, CHUB017, and CHUB018 for information about vegetation changes in this slough as one moves away from the river.
