Observation Narrative
The forest documented by this plot occupies a wet area where a small, rocky headwaters stream broadens into a more level, slightly depressed, and poorly drained section. Soils are sticky brown clay with orange mottling to the surface, typical of substrates on Triassic-age diabase. Forest composition is very typical of poorly drained Culpeper Basin floodplains, with Quercus palustris and Q. bicolor sharing dominance, and sedges prominent in the herb layer.
