Observation Narrative
This plot is located in the same slough as CHUB014, CHUB017, and CHUB018. It occupies an intermediate position where the slough narrows and the bottom is not so swampy. The habitat has heavy clay soils that are imperfectly drained, but appears to be flooded only infrequently, with limilted or no pooling of surface water. The overstory vegetation is similar to that of the higher terraces of the Nottoway basin, with Quercus michauxii and Q. pagoda co-dominating. However, Fraxinus pennsylvanica is an equally important associate here, indicating somewhat wetter conditions than on the high terraces. The understory contains considerable cover of Arundinaria gigantea, and the herb layer is a mix of swamp species and mesophytes.
