Observation Narrative
This plot is located in the same slough as CHUB014, CHUB016, and CHUB018. It is situated some 400 meters farther away (upstream) from the river than CHUB016. Here the slough is broader and deeper, with Nyssa aquatica and Taxodium distichum making a re-appearance as canopy dominants. Nyssa biflora is also present, though much less numerous than its congener. The shrub layer consists primarily of acidophiles such as Leucothoe racemosa and Clethra alnifolia. Carex joorii is the only herb with appreciable cover. It appears that the soils in this part of the slough, which borders dry sandy uplands, are more oligotrophic than the soils downstream where more diverse swamp vegetation occurs. The site was dry at the time of survey. There were no clear water marks, and moss covered the swollen buttresses of the trees. Baldcypress knees were < 20 cm tall.
