Observation Narrative
This plot is located in the same slough as CHUB014, CHUB016, and CHUB017. It is situated only 50 meters from CHUB017 but is located in a narrow side channel next to the upland and separated from the main slough by an "island" of mesic beech-oak hardwoods. A long, narrow plot configuration (10 x 40 m) was used to keep the sample entirely within the channel. This habitat is less deeply flooded than the main slough, and the vegetation appears to be younger. Nyssa biflora co-dominates the canopy and dominates the sub-canopy, with scattered associates of Quercus lyrata and Liquidambar styraciflua. Ilex opaca is common around the edges of the swale. Patches of Sphagnum and other mosses occur on logs and tree bases. Both the woody and herbaceous floras are considerably more diverse than in CHUB017, but still suggest an acidic, nutrient-poor substrate.
