Observation Narrative
This site is a broad, short stream bottom draining an undulating upland just east of the Fall Line. It is located at the edge of a county park, adjacent ot a residential area. This part of the bottom is subject to shallow seasonal flooding, or at least pooling of water, during part of the year. It has hummock and hollow microtopography, with leaf litter covering most of the depressions and better-drained hummocks supporting hydrophytic herbs. The forest overstory within the plot is dominated by two sizeable Quercus bicolor specimens, along with a younger cohort of Acer rubrum and Liquidambar styraciflua. The plot was not able to capture the full complement of oaks in the stand; Quercus palustris was formerly important in the plot (two snags were present), Quercus phellow was observed outside the quadrat upstream.
