Observation Narrative
The plot was positioned in the most mature portion of a forested wetland occupying a broad, ~ 10-acre upland depression just east of the Fall Line. Most of the stand was cut over a few decades ago and supports even-aged regeneration of Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Nyssa sylvatica. Some larger oaks (primarily Quercus palustris and a few Q. phellos) were left in and around the plot. The clay content of soils here increases with depth, and drainage is likely impeded by a plastic hardpan subsoil. The shrub and herbaceous vegetation is fairly open but relatively diverse for this type of community. Exotics (e.g. Lonicera japonica, Microstegium vimineum) spreading from nearby disturbed and developed areas are potentially problematic.
