Observation Narrative
Plot covers approximately 400 square meters. However, the great density of vegetation made it impractical to lay out tapes and sample a precise area. Therefore, a data were collected from a "plotless" sample whose boundaries were visually estimated. The site is a large, superficially peat-filled swale containing a mixed forest of Pinus taeda, Acer rubrum, and Nyssa biflora, with scattered Atlantic white-cedar and dense evergreen shrubs (especially Lyonia lucida). The ground is covered mostly in pine needles with some patches of sphagnum. The 28 m tall canopy is very open above a denser subcanopy of Acer rubrum. At least historically, fires from immediately adjacent longleaf pine sandhills must have burned into this wetland fairly frequently, but fires have been excluded for an extended period (> 50 years). Several dead or fallen Atlantic white-cedar were observed near the plot.
