Observation Narrative
The environmental setting of this plot is similar to that of SUFC028, a large non-riverine swale / swamp in sandhills formerly dominated by longleaf pine. At this site, peat deposits are deep and the ground has pronounced hummock-and-hollow microtopography. Forest vegetation is a mixed stand of Acer rubrum, Nyssa biflora, Pinus taeda, and Chamaecyparis thyoides, which are much taller than the other trees and also likely older. Magnolia virginiana strongly dominates both the shrub and lowest tree layers, although a mixture of other shrubs co-occurs. Ferns grow in patches on hummocks. Patches of sphagnum are also present.
