Observation Narrative
Plot encompasses most of an elongate, rocky bar by Laurel Fork. This type of habitat occurs intermittently along a considerable reach of this stream, where boulders and alluvium have been deposited in convex depositional bars. The vegetation lacks trees and has only occasional shrubs; it grades from dominance by Carex torta along the edge of the stream channel to that by various coarse forbs on the higher part of the bar. The adjacent alluvial terrace.is forested with Betula alleghaniensis and other hardwoods, with an understory of Rhododendron maximum.
