Observation Narrative
Saturated red spruce forest in small valley bottom along the headwaters of Bearwallow Run. Spruce occurs on well-drained hummocks and peat-filled, saturated depressions are dominated by grasses, sedges, and sphagnum. Sphagnum cover is relatively shallow and occurs directly over mineral soil. Many other mosses and some lichens are present. Stand is about 80 years old and regenerated following extensive railroad logging and fires in the 1920's.
