Observation Narrative ? A shallow mountain pond about 1 acre in size with many small depressions, some still holding water on the date of survey. The area is strongly dominated by the shrub Cephalanthus occidentalis, with a few open, herb-dominated depressions. The shrub stratum is 1-2 meters tall and the shrubs have a moss mat beneath and lichens growing on the branches. The plot captures the pond margin and a portion of the center. The surrounding forest is Oak / Heath with Quercus coccinea, Quercus montana, Pinus pungens over short ericads.
