Observation Narrative ? Plot is at the edge of a tidal salt flat, which has formed recently along an inlet that has breached a broad "hook" of undulating dunes off the north end of Wallops Island. Vegetation is dominated by the short form of Spartina alterniflora but contains significant numbers of characteristic salt flat species such as Salicornia virginica and Limonium carolinianum. It is possible that this area at the back of the wetland is actively undergoing succession from salt flat to salt marsh.
