Observation Narrative ? Plot is located on a tidal flat adjacent to a slightly higher area supporting salt scrub (Baccharis - Iva) vegetation. Fifteen years ago this marsh was a salt flat co-dominated by Plantago maritima var. juncoides, Sarcocornia perennis, Distichlis spicata, Borrichia frutescens, and Fimbristylis castanea. The Plantago species was not seen during this survey, and the short form of Spartina alternifolia has become strongly dominant. At the back of the marsh in and around the plot, Distichlis dominates an even shorter layer, but thins out considerably toward the channel to the north. The tallest grasses in the sample are about 1 meter tall, but the average stand height is 0.5 m.
