Observation Narrative
Freshwater marsh on the edge of Pitt Creek in its upper reaches. The plot was sampled between high and low tide. The vegetation was patchy with exposed mud and water between clumps of graminoids and marsh forbs. A zone of Pontederia is nearest the creek channel, while Typha forms a zone further away from the channel. The vegetation becomes more continuous away from the channel toward the upland edge (outside the plot). Zizania aquatica was almost senesced and likely has much higher cover earlier in the year. Upper Pitts Creek is the only site on Virginia's Eastern Shore for tidal freshwater marshes, and they are confined to a small reach between an extensive oligohaline marsh zone downstream and tidal swamp forests that border the channel upstream.
