Observation Narrative
This plot captures a patch of scrub behind a low foredune. It is part of an occurrence that is large to extensive on Smith Island. This shrub thicket has many vines and is notable because of the presence of Persea palustris and Ilex vomitoria. The shrubs exhibited branch die-back from recent hurricane-driven salt spray. The area is occasionally inundated by storm surge, and always saturated by ground water.
