Observation Narrative ? Plot is within an extensive shrubland that occurs in a swale behind the fore dunes. It is rarely flooded by storm tides but is saturated by ground water. Stems of dominant Myrica cerifera shrubs (5 m tall) are dense, and their evergreen leaves cast the area underneath in deep shade. Consequently, most of the herbaceous component recorded in the plot grows on the outside edge of the shrubland.
