Observation Narrative
The plot captures an open, 4 acre (1.6 ha) shrub thicket, isolated within a large marsh. The shrubland is in the back of the marsh, about 200 m from the upland dunes in one direction and 500 meters from open water in the other direction. Myrica cerifera dominates, but Baccharis halimifolia is a common associate. Because of the density of stems, shrubs were subsampled in a 8X5 m plot (20%). Few herbaceous species occur in the dense shade under Myrica; those recorded grew mostly on the edge of the shrubland.
