Observation Narrative
Plot located on south side of saddle on ridge spur jutting west below the summit of Stuarts Knob. This area was farther removed from the extensive mining operations than FSSP002, and also occupies a drier site with heavier cover of grasses and ericads that are unpalatable (or undesirable) to deer. This part of the stand has a mixed canopy of Quercus montana, Q. alba, and Carya ovalis, with Fraxinus americana dominating the sub-canopy layers. Vaccinium stamineum forms a patchy low shrub layer, while the herb flora is patch-dominated by Dichanthelium boscii, Piptochaetium avenaceum, and Carex pensylvanica. A number of low-cover forbs are scattered throughout.
