Observation Narrative
One of several small openings in a 0.8-ha (2-acre) shrubby fen in a lateral seepage area flanking Rattle Creek. This opening follows a small spring run filled with muck and limestone gravel. Shrubs and small trees of Thuja occidentalis, Salix sericea, Hypericum densiflorum var. interior, and other species are actively invading the site, which was formerly kept open by cattle grazing. Herbaceous diversity, including several rare species, is concentrated in this and other openings, providing a floristic baseline for restoration of open wetlands across the entire fen. Prescribed fire would likely help reduce the invasion of Thuja, although the wetness of the site would also make burning problematic.
