Observation Narrative
Plot is in the larger of two isolated upland depressions embedded in a matrix of oak/heath forest. The site is a broad, nearly level upland ridgetop. The sampled wetland is dominated by oaks (primarily Quercus phellos and Q. lyrata) 15-50 cm DBH. Areas of bare leaf littler and areas of Smilax / Vaccinium thickets form a mosaic; around the edges a few openings have a cover of Sphagnum. Water marks on trees are at ca. 40 cm above the soil surface in the deepest part of the plot. Quercus lyrata is very common and consists of various age classes, including some seeding regeneration in herb layer.
