Observation Narrative
Plot captures a small backswamp of the Ni River floodplain. This area ponds water for much of the year, and only drew down in late June. Shallow channels run through the area, carrying flood waters from the Ni into the depression. An active beaver lodge and dam are located downstream and beaver activity is beginning to influence the site. Vegetation is an open forest dominated by Acer rubrum in the overstory and Saururus cernuus in the herb layer. The small tree and shrub layers are very open.
