Observation Narrative
Plot GPNF008 was sampled closer to the center of this one-acre mountain-top sag pond, where the vegetation is entirely herbaceous. This plot was placed on the northwest side of the pond, where the vegetation is slightly more diverse. The wetland is situated at 3200 ft elevation, on a very broad sandstone ridge crest covered by extremely acidic, fire-prone pine-oak/heath woodlands and oak/heath forest. Vegetation in and near the plot is herbaceous, with a few pitch pines and clumps of Cephalanthus occidentalis near the pond margins. Local areas of this zone are also dominated by expansive colonies of Vaccinium macrocarpon. The ground has a continuous cover of sphagnum mosses. The plot encompasses a "pie slice" that includes both the marginal zone with Cephalanthus and the Dulichium arundinaceum-Carex aquatilis dominated central part of the wetland.
