Observation Narrative
Gentle slope with stony soils in saddle at very head of the western branch of Back Creek on Allegheny Mountain. Many large trees were left in this area when it was last cut. Vegetation is a typical, Central Appalachian Northern Red Oak Forest. No oak recruitment present, understory dominated by Betula lenta and other mesophytic trees. Shrub layer very sparse but herb layer well developed.
