Observation Narrative
Quillen Pond #3 of Hayslett report. Drawn-down Shenandoah Valley sinkhole pond with a long history of disturbance, although free of disturbance in recent years. The east end of the pond was bermed and deepened years ago to provide water for cattle. According to the landowner, the pond was mowed for a number of years after cattle grazing ended. Despite these alterations, pin oak is recruiting heavily back into the unaltered part of the pond (ca. 0.4 ac), and the current herbaceous flora is overwhelmingly co-dominated by thousands of two globally rare plants, Helenium virginicum and Boltonia montana.
0-1 cm: humus

One end of this sinkhole pond was deepened to create a livestock pond; the other end was cleared of trees. It has been subjected to periods of cattle grazing and mowing in the past, but has been free of these disturbances for a decade or more.
