Observation Narrative ? Quillen Pond #1 ("Stage Pond") of Hayslett report. A large (2.5 acres including the forested border), undisturbed Shendndoah Valley sinkhole pond with decent forest buffer and a history of minimal disturbance, according to the Quillens. This plot represents the community in the more deeply flooded, central zone, encompassing about two-thirds of the whole pond. Vegetation is a sparse shrubland with scattered patches of Cephalanthus occidentalis in a matrix of dense dominance patches of Polygonum amphibeum, Polygonum hydropiperoides, and Leersia oryzoides. These species become scarce along the slightly higher marginal zone, where plants such as Quercus palustris, Hypericum boreale, Boltonia montana, and Panicum rigidulum var. rigidulum are abundant (see plot AUGU017).
