Observation Narrative
A small (ca. 300 sq. m) but pristine grassland barren situated on the lower slope of Beecher Ridge above Keyser Hollow. This is one of three similar openings that occur along this contour above the hollow. A spine of massive metabasalt limits soil development and fosters a strongly convex slope shape, both of which act to preclude woody vegetation. The plot captures the central portion of the barren, which is strongly dominated by a grassland complex of Bouteloua curtipendula, Schizachyrium scoparium, and several grasses and sedges of lesser abundance. Forbs, including Helianthus divaricatus, Senna marilandica, and Symphyotrichum oblongifolium, are also common, especially around the edges of the opening. Exposed, moss-and-lichen covered rock surfaces and crevices support a suite of characteristic lithophytes, including Phemeranthus teretifolium, Isanthus brachiatus, and Cheilanthes lanosa. A most noteworthy plant on the rocks here is Trifolium virginicum (Kate's mountain clover), known primarily from Ridge and Valley shales and not previously recorded from metabasalt or the Blue Ridge. The barren grades quickly into dry oak-hickory forest on all sides.
