Observation Narrative
A small "flatrock" opening on a rocky, southeast-facing slope. Bedrock is metabasalt of the Catoctin Formation. Within the plot area, a large part of the outcrop is mantled with mats of Selaginella rupestris, with lithophytes such as Cyperus lupulinus, Bulbostylis capillaris, Aristida dichotoma, and Cheilanthes lanosa also scattered. The western side of the plot has more soil veneers and supports grassier vegetation of Sorghastrum nutans, Bouteloua curtipendula, Muhlenbergia capillaris, Danthonia spicata, and Carex pensylvanica.
