Observation Narrative
Outer Coastal Plain mesic "flatwoods" dominated by Fagus grandifolia is all layers. The overwhelming dominance of beech was likely hastened by past logging, which removed canopy oaks, and by a complete lack of fire in recent decades. The plot was placed in an area that contained a few herbs; in most of the stand, very deep litter and dense shade from stratified beech and holly foliage has eliminated all herbaceous plants and most woody seedlings.
