Observation Narrative
Small stand of medium-aged oak-hickory forest which, despite moderately high cover of Lonicera japonica and heavy deer browse impacts, is one of the richest and most floristically diverse stands ever sampled on the Virginia Eastern Shore. The dominance of Podophyllum peltatum and presence of species such as Quercus muehlenbergii, Carya cordiformis, Ostrya virginiana, Lindera benzoin, Cardamine concatenata, Sanguinaria canadensis, and Phryma leptostachya suggest a soil nutrient status rarely found in Eastern Shore forests. The plot was placed in an area with relatively low cover of Lonicera and Podophyllum; the trees are also somewhat smaller than elsewhere. Remarkably, this stand has not been cut in many decades, although it likely has a history of livestock grazing.
