Observation Narrative
Small floodplain along the Banister River. Plot is located about 100 meters from the main river channel, on a flat with shallow, seasonally flooded depressions. An old ditch runs through the plot toward the river. The forest is young, with a few scattered large oaks that have persisted from when the site was cleared. The largest trees are Quercus phellos; Betula nigra, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Acer rubrum are common throughout in younger age classes. The floodplain forest grades into a young upland forest of Fraxinus americana, Carya spp., and Quercus alba. Exotic plants are abundant in the surrounding forest. Moss covers the banks of the ditch and occupies small, elevated hummocks.
