Plot located in most open portion of a shale barren. Sample site is a small opening - maybe 12 x 30 meters - within a xeric woodland of Pinus virginiana, Quercus rubra, Q. montana, and Carya glabra. Cladonia lichens dominate the ground locally; small areas of Unvegetated shale fragments also occur. Much of the plot has somewhat deeper soil and is dominated by the grasses Schizachyrium scoparium, Danthonia spicata, and Piptochaetium avenaceum. Other noteworthy species occurring in the stand include the federally listed Boechera serotina, Paronychia montana, Symphyotrichum laeve var. concinnum, Brickellia eupatorioides, Trifolium virginicum, Antennaria virginica, Sporobolus clandestinus, and Asclepias verticillata.
