Observation Narrative
Plot on crest of a one-acre forested hammock / low island near the edge of Parkers Marsh and along the north side of Onancock Creek. The overstory is dominated by Pinus taeda, with a subcanopy of Prunus serotina. The shrub layer is largely a mix of Prunus serotina and Morella cerifera. The herb layer is generally sparse in the northern half of the plot; the southern half has a nearly continuous clone of Carex arenaria, a sand-loving species reported to be an introduction along the north Atlantic coast. Several other forested hammocks similar to this one occur nearby.
