Observation Narrative
Openly forested hammock ("Marks Island") on tidal creek surrounded by marsh on the Bay side of the Eastern Shore. Tall loblolly pine over subcanopy/shrub layer of Prunus serotina (dominant), Juniperus virginiana, etc. The herb layer is dominated in one half by dense Ammophila and other dune grasses, but is fairly sparse in the other half. The hammock is overwashed frequently by storm surges and thatch from both dune and marsh grasses have accumulated, forming an exceptionally deep cover on the forest flood. Unexpectedly, both Quercus phellos and Q. falcata were found to occur in the stand, albeit sparingly.
