Observation Narrative
This plot is located on a 500 Forest Foundation easement, and was monumented to facilitate resampling in the future. A PVC pipe marks the NE corner. Three meters from the corner at 230 degrees is tree tag #450 on a 19.9 cm Acer saccharum. 5.5. meters from the corner at 320 degrees is tag #451 on a 14.9 Fraxinus americana. Tags are at breast height facing the creek. See sketch on original field form.
The vegetation at this site is a very rich cove forest that extends for a considerable distance on the northeast-facing slope along Mill Creek; MONT017 is a 2008 plot sampled from the same stand downstream in the Mill Creek Natural Area Preserve. The underlying rock is Elbrook dolomite and soils are high in pH, calcium, and magnesium. In this part of the stand, Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana var. heterophylla, and Liriodendron tulipifera are the principal overstory trees. The largest trees are right along the stream at the base of the plot, and tree stature is reduced upslope. The shrub layer is sparse, but the herb layer is dense and lush, with many nutrient-demanding forbs.
