Observation Narrative
The plot (along with ROCB012 and ROCB014) is representative of many small, nearly level, limestone "flatrock" openings occurring in a matrix of disturbed limestone forests and residential areas just east of Lexington. Although heavily disturbed in the past, these flat bedrock "glades" are unique in Virginia and have their closest affinity with the Cedar Glades of Tennessee. Vegetation is a curious mix of low perennial forbs and annual graminoides, sometimes with dense islands or marginal thickets of Juniperus virginiana. At least two species new to the Virginia flora (Sedum pulchellum and Scutellaria parvula) were found here during the summer of 2014. This particular sample contains about 15-20% Juniperus cover, with Allium cernuum, Packera anonyma, Panicum flexile, and Sporobolus vaginiflorus contributing the highest covers.
