Observation Narrative
Data were collected from a visually estimated 10 x 10 m quadrat ("plotless" sample) on this lower, moist, vertical cliff face with ledges. The mesic cliff vegetation at the base of the cliff face is dominated by bryophytes, with < 10% vascular plant cover (in cracks and on ledges) and large areas of apparently bare rock. The cliff face continues about the sample as an open, xeric sandstone exposure with diverse lichens. Immediately downslope is a diverse, mesic forest on steep slopes (RICH COVE FOREST), with Liriodendron tulipifera, Tilia americana var. heterophylla, Tsuga canadensis, Magnolia tripetala, Acer saccharum/nigrum, Asimina triloba (dominant), Ribes sp., Hydrangea arborescens, Laportea canadensis (dominant), Solidago flexicaulis, Impatiens pallida, Trillium sulcatum, Actaea pachypoda, and Asarum canadense.
