Observation Narrative
A classic Piedmont upland depression swamp/pond occurring in diabase flatwoods at Fort Pickett. This pond is dominated by even-aged, medium-size Quercus phellow, with few shrubs and very sparse herbaceous vegetation beneath. The site is located in the live-fire training area ("imact area") of the base, and the adjacent upland forest burns frequently. There is currently little fuel to carry a fire through the pond, but the high frequency of incendiary fires over the past 70 years may account for the very sparse shrub and herb floras.
