River flows through rapids in bend about 20 m below plot. Forest upstream to picnic area is hemlock / rhododendron, still w/ heavy canopy. Across river is unvegetated, riverscoured boulder bar.;Overhanging sandstone bedrock just above river, probably eroded by ancient stream channel, although it is never flooded today. Overhang extends as much as 10 m, with large trees rooted on top. Community never receives precipitation ground flow, (but some seepage), but humidity provides moisture for dust lichens and bryophytes. Cave is along outside bend of river.
