The plot is located on a northerly slope of a narrow east flowing unnamed tributary of the Guyandotte River. Down river is the Guyandotte tunnel and campground. North, across the tributary from the plot the forest is mostly deciduous. Upslope from the plot the forest appears to be deciduous/rhododendron. The road is located ~40m northeast of the plot.;Dark and cool northerly aspect. The overstory is dominated by eastern hemlock with an even mixture of deciduous trees in the gaps. There is little to no cover on the forest floor except for several clumps of christmas fern. There is a large deer trail which passes through the middle of the plot. There is a fair diversity of herbs, unfortunately, many have been heavily browsed.
