Landscape Narrative ? The point is located along the backchannel of the floodplain. Across the river from the point is the Bluestone State Park (Mill Run Camp Ground). The gorge slope above the plot is land locked by private land. So the best access is by crossing the river. The river side of the floodplain is a more typical floodplain forest with Platanus occidentalis and Ulmus americana. Uphill from the plot it graded to mixed mesophytic forest. The floodplain is crossed by an eroded gulley with a narrow band of mixed mesophytic forest (BLUE.117).;Successional floodplain forest dominated by Betula nigra. Area was probably cleared for farming at one time.
Representativeness ? Medium sized patch of Betula niga / Boehmeria cylindrica floodplain forest. Similar to the plot BLUE.73 only here it is less weedy. Point was surveyed while looking for another example of our slow water Betula nigra community identified on 5/26/2005 (BLUE
