Concave aspect have of mixed-mesophytic forests with hemlock co dominant or only scattered. Grades from mix-meso to rich hemlock to hemlock / sparse Rhododendron maximum (this plot).;The plot is convex on a north aspect on the colluvial nose below a sandstone cliffband. The forest is dominated by hemlock in the canopy with a lesser amount of deciduous species including large chestnut oak. Rhododendron maximum is in the underdstory and higher dominance of hemlocks seems to be forced by the sandstone colluvium but there is also surficial shale-gravel which favors rich site herbs.

Plot is centered on area of rocky nose which supports scattered large Rhododendron maximum. The plot also has a rich composite of herbs.
