The point is located upstream from the confluence of the Little Bluestone ca. 0.5 miles. The terrace above the point is a successional forest / woodland of Platanus occidentalis - Betula nigra / Rosa mutiflora. Probably cleared for agriculture prior to the acquisition by the NPS. Beyond the terrace is the Bluestone Turnpike trail located ca. 50 west of this obs point.;The point is located on a low terrace along a long slow stretch of the Bluestone river. The terrace is probably subject to frequent flooding. Although there are few if any trees on this low terrace it recieves shade from the overhanging trees on the upper terrace above. The woodland floor is covered with a dense tall herb layer dominated by Verbesina alternifolia, Hesperis matronalis, and Chasmanthium latifolium. This community type should be sampled later in the summer for full floristics.
Representativeness
The point was placed in a narrow patch of a woodland / tall herb commmunity. Point was placed due to relative abundance of flowering plants needed for the Bluestone Floristic Inventory. This point is similar to communities found along the New River. This
