This community occurs on steep cool north facing acidic midslopes. At the top of the cliff, above the plot there is a large Rhododendron maximum component to the hemlock community. Below the plot the forest rapidly transitions into mixed meso dominated by Tilia americana and Acer saccharum with some Tsuga.;The plot is located on a north facing steep slope, below a large cliff. The forest is cool and dark. The forest is littered with old logged stumps. The soil is highly acidic (4.75).
Representativeness
Large patch, cool acidic cliff break. Tsuga canadensis, Quercus prinus, and Betula lenta. There is some Acer saccharum coming up. The shrub and herbaceous layers are depauperate.
