Varieties of this community occur in discontinuous linear patches up and down stream on both sides of the Bluestone. At least as far as the Little Bluestone confluence. Beyond here the Dam influences water levels and the stream side plots are mostly lower terrace woodlands. There is a narorw terrace 110m across above the plot. There is a thin band of hemlock growing between the plot and the trail on the high terrace. Across the trail is an early successonal floodplain forest dominated by Pinus strobus and Liriodendron tulipifera with trace amounts of Tsuga (BLUE.40).;Frequently flooded this season. All species were flood battered. While sampling this plot the river rose 6 inches in less than an hour. The microtopography of the plot was of small channels running around clumps of sandy soil and river rock held together by Carex roots. Most of the plants were found either growing on these hummocks, or on the ecocline with the higher terrace. A fisherman's trail runs parallel to the river on the higher terrace.
Representativeness
