Community repeats in both directions on the North facing slopes in similar draws. Between the draws it is broken up by drier Quercus prinus-Tsuga canadensis ridge spurs or "noses" (see Blue.66). The transition between this community is rather abrupt ca. 12m East, the mossy rocks end and the forest becomes dominated by Quercus prinus-Tsuga canadensis. Likewise the community is found again ca 20m.;Cool mesic shallow cove bottom, moss covered rock-river. A few large sugar maples and basswood growing over a sparse T3 layer of hemlock, buckeye, and more sugar maple. Fairly dense herb layer. Heavy moss cover on the 0.5m squared sandstone rocks. A deer trail crosses the slope in an area of less rock cover. Most of the trees grow on the edges of the plot and overhang the plots "gut". Fire scars found on uphill side of the largest trees.
Representativeness
Medium sized patch of mesic forest occurring in steep mesic draw. Plot was placed to contrast the ridge "nose" plot sampled earlier (BLUE.66). The community is only slightly wider than the plot.
