Floodplain forest/woodland complex, broken up by a back channel. At one point the channel divides creating an "island" between back channels. In the areas along the edge more light reaches the forest floor. Throughout the edge areas dominant plants are Platanus occidentalis/tall herbs, mostly composed of Verbesina alternifolia and Urtica. Throughout the back channel several small patches of Carex emoryi were growing . The island is a mosaic of this plot and these more open areas. There is a nice Platanus occidentalis/herb patch adjacent to the plot along the riverside. There is a large open hayfield ca. 200m West of the plot. The river is ca. 30m to the East.;Well shaded floodplain forest on an "island" created by frequently flooded back channel. The forest here is dominated by Fraxinus pensylvanica-Acer negundo over dense herb cover of Urtica,. Alliaria, and Verbesina alternifolia. The area appears to have recently been flooded (sand over topsoil and little litter/duff). There is lots of garbage located throughout the community. Mostly assorted plastic bottles washed in from flooding. The tall Urtica and dense Alliaria heavily reduce this communities attractiveness. This area is probably more diverse in spring.
Representativeness
Medium sized patch of floodplain forest, similar to an observation point taken across the river in 2003. The plot was placed in the middle of a large photo signature on a back channel "island".
