On the levee towards the river is more typical floodplain forest with Platanus occidentalis/Ulmus americana. Across the back-channel is also a matrix flood-plain forest grading uphill to mix-meso.;Back side of levee in a broad floodplain of the Bluestone River. This community is a forest of overarching Betula nigra over a lush tall herb layer dominated by Verbesina alternifolia, with Leersia becoming dominant in bottom of swale. Betula monoculture may be favored by fine textured soil.
Representativeness
Plot is centered on a small patch of Betula nigra. This patch is different from plot BLUE.62 sampled in May 2005, which was clearly a wetland unlike this plot. BLUE.62 was located on back of levee rather than in back swale.
